Install instructions

MAC USERS: The game requires a small extra step prior to being able to run on the Mac OS. The official GameMaker documentation is provided in the link below, but we will summarize the steps:

1. After downloading the Mac version of the game, unzip the file on the Desktop and a GameMaker file should appear.

1.5 If you double click the GameMaker file at this point, it will say 'MAUL is damaged and can't be opened, you should move it to the trash'. This is expected. The following steps will show you how to resolve that issue and make MAUL playable.

2. Open the Terminal (cmd+space, typer 'Terminal', return).

3. In the Terminal, type the following command but do not press enter: 'xattr -d com.apple.quarantine ' (include the space at the end).

4. Click and drag the GameMaker file that came from the initial .zip download onto the Terminal window. This will provide the command you typed with a path to the appropriate executable.

5. Press return. Nothing should actually happen.

6. Double click the GameMaker file to run the game - it should now run successfully!

Important Notes: This procedure should definitely work correctly if you have the most recent macOS (Catalina at the time of this writing). macOS Sierra has been tested to work as well, macOS Yosemite did not work.

A brief explanation for why this is necessary: Apple's security protocol prohibits downloads of .app files from unrecognized (non-App Store) developers. The protocol 'quarantines' .app files that are unrecognized from being run on your machine. This command removes the 'quarantine' on the .app file and allows you to run it.
